Neue Wege / New paths

Actually I had a different idea which way to walk today, but suddenly I changed my mind and turned left.

Arkenberge
I can see this hill - Arkenberge - every day from the horse pension and always wanted to go there. I also know that I tried to find some information about it and it was disappointing what I found out. But this day had the scent of some adventure.

Zu Beginn
The start
Hagebutte sind reif
Rose hips are mellow
Right now rose hips have my attention, because Point and Pepe are making strange movements with their mouth. It looks as if a spine sticks in their palate. They are not the only ones who do that at the horse pension and one explanation is a parasite (worm) which makes lots of tiny wounds in the mouth. I'm looking for alternatives and rose hip is one, because it is a natural Anthelmintikum. If a Anthelmintikum helps depends on the stage of development of the worm. If you have any suggestions please contact me, I'm very open for tips and discussion!

Unsere Beobachter
We are watched
Immer in Richtung Hügel.
I was several times at this point, but today I kept moving. Always approaching the hill. But we didn't come really close, because it is a protected area. Instead we found a beautiful circular route called lion's-tooth path.

Löwenzahnpfad
Abenteuer pur
Adventure pure
Partial it is a very small path beside a fence. On the other side is an incredible big meadow with water buffalo and konik pony. At one point I actually could see the konik pony grazing close to the fence and that was the point when I turned around. Pepe is acting like a wild stallion when we meet other horses and on this small path I have no chance to control him. Too dangerous for me and the animals around me. We come back when the meadow season is over. Promise! There are small wooden bridges which you have to cross. We crossed one and I made great pictures. Accidentally I deleted them and I was so angry that don't wanted to write this post.

Die Gegend nennt sich Schönerlinder Teiche
The area is called Schönerlinde Teiche
Our hike was coming to an end when I heard very soft splashes in the puddles beside me. First I saw nothing, but then I spotted the frogs. It is a very long time since I saw such green frogs.

This was the first I spotted after a splash

The natural park Barnim - my Ponys live at one edge of it - is a 750 square kilometer huge natural preserve. Alexanders comment today was: "This is huge, you can be out there for a very long time!"

  1. These parasites in the mouth, are you speaking of Bot Fly problems? I understand that bot fly eggs, laid on the inner front legs, withers, and places where the horse will groom itself and others will groom him, are then ingested to complete their life cycle by passing through the gut and out to produce next years' bot flies. Occasionally one will encyst itself in the mouth, oftentimes between teeth and can cause big problems. I have never had this happen, but it sounds terrible. Is it bot fly that is the problem Sabine?

  2. Hi Mrs Shoes, today I had a phone call with my vet and I'm more than sure that the problem are the bot fly. It's awful. Seams that only horses who graze gets it ???

  3. I read about the Arkenberge, how funny that the largest hill in Berlin is a man-made debris pile! But it does say the summit will be open in 2019. Any new place is a good adventure. Especially with frogs!

  4. Not it's not funny 'out of man-made debris'. I thought about your book recommendation: The world without us, and how he described what will happen with the hill.
But last week I was in Linz, Austria. It is a city build for cars. Lots and lots of concrete no green. Back in Berlin you can see green everywhere. Berlin is not a clean city but also not dirty. Lots of broken concrete and holes and everywhere comes the green through. I think that is the reason that I feel so comfortable in this city. You can see how 'The world without us' can be. Thanks again for this great book!
